Call to Prayer
One final note from magnificent, majestic Istanbul. What impacted me most, and the memory most deeply etched is being in the long courtyard between Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque at dusk when the call to prayer took place. While mostly in sync, each mosque begins their call to prayer a few seconds apart from neighboring mosques. From where we stood we heard the first call begin and within seconds we were hearing it come from dozens of mosques in every direction. A beautiful melody resulted inspiring the birds to take flight and make laps overhead. With the sun slowly disappearing and the light changing, I was incredibly moved by the beauty of the moment.
Luis and I have brought up this moment several times since the visit and this is the scene I have taken with me from our short time in Istanbul, not the negative image that has recently blanketed Turkey and Istanbul. It was heart-wrenching and infuriating to learn of the bombs that went off at their airport a few weeks after we left and more recently of the upheavals surrounding the failed coup attempt. Yet another beautiful country temporarily tainted by violence. Tourism was already down when were there in early May and I can only imagine how it is now. I hope this all passes over quickly and in the meantime keep the Turkish community in my thoughts. I for one can’t wait to return, soon I hope!!
(I haven’t uploaded a video to the blog before, so I hope it works!)
