Calories for a cause
It’s been a long time since I’ve showcased some delicious food from Asia! It hasn’t been for lack of opportunity; it’s because I got tired of always having my camera on me.
Earlier this week in Vientiane, I took Betty out for lunch and it was such a beautiful looking spread that I was inspired enough to get my camera out.
More importantly, the venue was wonderful. I fell in love with Friends the Restaurant in Phnom Pehn and had a delicious tapa-styple Cambodian meal there. This restaurant is run by Mith Samlanh, a local branch of Friends International and one of their programs is to train street children (of which there are an overwhelmingly alarming number of in PP), particularly those vulnerable to drug addiction, how to work and thrive in the restaurant industry. By visiting their restaurant you not only get to enjoy delicious local cuisine but you also support this cause and enjoy the wonderful service by the trainees. I tried to visit their second restaurant in PP, Romdeng, but they were closed for the Chinese New Year.
In Vientiane there is another restaurant, Makphet, run by the local Lao branch. It was here where I enjoyed this:
Tender beef marinated in Lao whiskey and served with greens, tomato and toasted frangipani flower. With a side of sticky rice and a watermelon/citrus freeze….I was one happy cookie.

PS. Betty is my nook. We are in love.
