México Sur! Izamal
**Southern Mexico Series
I am in love with Southern Mexico! Most people think only of the Riviera Maya (Cozumel – Cancun – Playa del Carmen – Tulum) when they think Southern Mexico – indeed, a great place to spark a love affair with this region, but there is so much more! Permit me to take you on a speed tour through Southern Mexico, to some of the places that have captured my heart!
Izamal is one of the 100 or so towns in Mexico that has been officially declared a “Pueblo Magico” (magical town). This is an effort by the tourism board of Mexico to draw attention to many towns that are particularly appealing. While I’ve learned that some of the towns aren’t the list don’t seem all that magical to me, it’s usually a safe bet that it’s worth the time to at least drive through.
Izamal is quiet and don’t get caught without your dinner past 9pm because you’ll find most everything boarded up and lights out. It has preserved its deep roots in Mayan culture and the entire historic center of the town was painted a warm yellow in preparation for a visit from the pope about 20+ years ago. The monastery in the center of town is certainly eye-catching and the plaza can be lively during the day, and especially on a Sunday. Cruisin’ through small towns in the Yucatan is my favorite thing to do, and Izamal is no exception!
