México Sur! Isla Holbox
**Southern Mexico Series
I am in love with Southern Mexico! Most people think only of the Riviera Maya (Cozumel – Cancun – Playa del Carmen – Tulum) when they think Southern Mexico – indeed, a great place to spark a love affair with this region, but there is so much more! Permit me to take you on a speed tour through Southern Mexico, to some of the places that have captured my heart!
I have mixed feelings about the Yucatan Peninsula. It’s gorgeous and beautiful and relaxing. It’s also exploited and
depending on what a visit entails, you can manage to avoid absolutely all essence of what is Mexico. Nevertheless, it is visited by hundreds of thousands each year for a reason – it’s all that and a bag of chips!
Especially with cheap airfare into Cancun, it’s easy to reach the state of Yucatan and explore to your full heart’s desire. A colleague of Luis’s offered to lend us his car for a few days and we took off towards the coast and to the ferry that would transport us to Isla Holbox.
A short ferry ride from Chiquila and we were on the island of Holbox, happy as clams. The beach might not be as stunning as those further south in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, because it has a lot of natural ocean debris that washes up on the beach – but that doesn’t really matter to me. What does matter to me is that there is a small town you can walk to for dinner or to sit and watch the neighborhood’s friendly pickup game of bball. There aren’t many cars and hotels aren’t more than 2 stories high. As the crow flies, Holbox is quite near Cozumel and Cancun, but it feels like a world away. You can find solitude on this island, a treasure in the Yucatan. There have been rumors of a big development buying out the island and turning it into Cancun-style hotels…..I certainly hope not!!
