México Sur! Bacalar
**Southern Mexico Series
I am in love with Southern Mexico! Most people think only of the Riviera Maya (Cozumel – Cancun – Playa del Carmen – Tulum) when they think Southern Mexico – indeed, a great place to spark a love affair with this region, but there is so much more! Permit me to take you on a speed tour through Southern Mexico, to some of the places that have captured my heart!
A few hours south of Tulum brings you to the beautiful waters of Bacalar, one of our favorite places in Mexico! It can’t get better than the stillness and tranquility of this large lake on the border between Mexico and Belize. The best part is that the lake has the spectacular colors and transparency of the Caribbean but is fresh water. I don’t love salty water for more than a quick dip so I find this a win-win. Plus, it is just far enough from the Cancun airport to deter most visitors to the region, so it doesn’t have anything resembling a crowd.
The area is stunningly green with forest and thick mangrove right up to the water’s edge. The stillness of the water allows for private bungalows to be positioned out over the water, and for a fraction of the cost that an oceanfront private bungalow would cost 50 miles to the north. Kayak. Swim. Read. Stare.
We decided to stay in a rustic eco-lodge with comfortable cabañas, no electricity during the day and simple furnishings and we were happy with our stay. We’d love to check out the more luxurious Centro Akalki or Rancho Encantado, where we went for dinner one evening. Next time!
