México Sur! Merida
**Southern Mexico Series
I am in love with Southern Mexico! Most people think only of the Riviera Maya (Cozumel – Cancun – Playa del Carmen – Tulum) when they think Southern Mexico – indeed, a great place to spark a love affair with this region, but there is so much more! Permit me to take you on a speed tour through Southern Mexico, to some of the places that have captured my heart!
The city of Merida deserves a whole series of blog posts, but for now I’m including it in my flash tour through Southern Mexico because I like to make a pit stop in this lively (and sweltering) city as often as I can. Merida pulls together everything of the region’s blended Mayan-Spanish Colonial culture. It has a lot of history within an urban space. If it weren’t so bloody hot, we’d consider living in Merida….an idea that always sounds great until you’ve spent a few days there sweating.
There is always another museum to check out and restaurant to try. There are many great places to sample Yucatecan cuisine, which is very distinct from traditional Mexican fare. There are interesting lodging options inside mammoth old colonial homes and an irresistible blend of old meets new.
So, so, so much to do in Merida…..
