**A lot of this wording is taken directly from CUSO’s website.
Cuso International is a non-profit organization based in Ottawa that has worked in international development since 1961. They are one of North America’s largest non-profit groups that promotes long-term development through volunteers. CUSO places people who collaborate with local groups on projects in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. Volunteers share expertise and perspectives and unlock potential!
My previous employer is one of CUSO’s business partners. While employed with them I tapped into a program they offer which allows their employees to take a leave of absence in order to work with CUSO to volunteer in the developing world. I completed two volunteer assignments through this arrangement, and fully intend to volunteer directly through CUSO in the future!
- Thailand 2010-2011: I spent 6 months as a Small Business Advisor for an organization working to improve stability within Burma through training programs for young adults and youth from Burma. This was through CUSO’s Securing Livelihoods program.
- Peru 2013: I spent 3 months as a Small Business Adviser in rural Peru, supporting a small group of entrepreneurial women who produce artisanal chocolates. This was through CUSO’s Diaspora for Development Program, which provides diaspora communities with the opportunity to volunteer and contribute to development initiatives in their country or region of heritage. Given my strong ties to Latin America, I was able to participate in this program and offer my time to support this organization in Peru.
**All posts from these two experiences express opinions and thoughts entirely my own, which are not necessarily shared by CUSO.
